World War II Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard War Zone Dead with Southwest Iowa Next of Kin
In process 14 Feb 2023
Background
Late in 1946, the US Navy Department issued a WWII casualty publication for each state. Each such publication contained several lists, the longest two lists being:
  • Those who died in combat-related operations.
  • Those who were wounded in combat-related operations.
The list counts in the Iowa publication are as follows:
  • Combat Deaths 1,340; Prison Camp Deaths 40; Missing 32; Wounded 1,469; Released Prisoners 119; for a casualty total of 3,000.
Within a list, records are ordered alphabetically and consist of the decedant's name, rank, and service branch (Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard) followed by the next of kin's name and address.

  • The following two lists were built using the 1946 Navy Department report of Iowa WW II dead, https://www.naval-history.net/WW2UScasStateIowa.htm.
  • The Navy Department report and these lists exclude deaths from disease and deaths outside the war zone.
  • The Iowa section of the Navy Department report has the following counts:  Killed in Combat 1340;  Died as POW 40; Missing in action 32 - total 1412.
