Big Pigeon's World War II component supports what I call the Pottawattamie Area WWII Dead Roster. This roster memorializes over 500 Iowans who once lived in or near Pottawattamie County and who died in service during World War II, as well as over 100 other individuals.
The five modules comprising Big Pigeon's World War II component are listed on the right of the above navigation bar, namely WWII Home, WWII Roster, WWII US, WWII Japan, and WWII Germany. You can use the following links to access the content of these modules.

To View Pottawattamie Area WWII Dead Roster Member Information
From within Big Pigeon's WWII Roster module, you can view information about roster members from three perspectives:
- You can view lists of roster members' records. These records, which contain brief biographic data, are arranged alphabetically in seventeen webpages.
- You can view lists of roster members by their home residence location, by town for southwest Iowa, otherwise by county.
- You can view lists of roster members by death location, usually the campaign or battle in which they became a fatality.
World War II Combat Summaries
I am endeavoring to organize and summarize the United States role in World War II combat. The WWII Home module lists the combat summary webpages within the WWII Japan and WWII Germany modules. It includes links to submodules, each treating a portion of World War II combat. Not all summary webpages are complete.
The WWII US Module
The WWII US module contains disparate webpages that do not fit in nicely elsewhere. This is mostly information of a non-combat nature about the United States involvement in World War II. This module is largely independent of the Pottawattamie Area WWII Area Dead Roster project.
Linking the Pottawattamie Area WWII Dead Roster and the World War II Combat Summaries
Each roster member who died overseas during World War II appears in a list at the bottom of a corresponding WWII combat summary webpage. By reading this webpage, website visitors can hopefully gain some understanding of how a member's death figured into the complexity of World War II combat. (Remember that not all summary webpages are complete.)
Post-Separation Deaths
After leaving military service, many Word War II veterans carried with them a physical or psychic burden, which sadly was often unknown to their family, friends and community. I was curious if looking at the causes of death of WWII veterans who died within a few years of leaving service would cast any light on the nature of these burdens. A roster appendix includes a list of over 60 Pottawattamie area WWII veterans who died before the end of 1949, generally including the cause of death. View these records at WWII Roster > Roster Appendices > Post-Separation Deaths.
Roster Appendix members are included in the home residence lists mentioned above.
