In the European Theater, the German Army mounted counteroffensives in the Ardennes in Belgium and Luxembourg in December 1944 and in Alsace in northeastern France in January 1945. These offensives, occurring in the early winter, marked the transition between the War of Attrition in the fall of 1944 and the Allied advance to the Rhine in the late winter of 1945.
