The  Allied forces that landed in Normandy on D-Day, 6 June 1944, included elements of two armies, comprising the 21 Army Group, under the command of British General Bernard Montgomery. ​

Troops from four nations landed on D-Day:

• United States, 73,000
• British, 61,715 
• Canadian, 11,400
• French, 177 (most French troops were fighting in the Mediterranean Theater)

From east to west, the major Allied units that came ashore or landed by air on 6 June were:

British Second Army (Miles Dempsey).
From the air, near the Pegasus Bridge:

• British 6th Airborne Division (Gale).

• Sword Beach, British 3rd Infantry Division (Rennie).
• Juno Beach, Canadian 3rd Infantry Division (Keller).

◼Omaha Beach, V Corps (Gerow):

• 29th Infantry Division (Gearhardt) --> XIX Corps 14 June.

◼From the air, VII Corps, behind Utah Beach:

• 101st Airborne Division (Taylor) --> VIII Corps 15 June --> Ninth Army 15 July.
• 82nd Airborne Division (Ridgway) --> VIII Corps 19 June --> Ninth Army 13 July.
