I treat ground combat in Italy as consisting of four chronological stages (see the second map):

|
Sicily to Naples Timeline, July–October 1943:
Naples to Cassino & Anzio, October 1943–June 1944:
Cassino & Anzio to Rome, October 1943–June 1944:
Northern Italy, June 1944–May 1945:

::::::::::::::::: Concordance between the US Italian campaigns and their treatment in Big Pigeon ::::::::::::::::::
- In the following concordance, I break the Naples-Foggia campaign into three phases and the Rome-Arno campaign into four phases.
|
The six official US ground campaigns in Italy:
1 - Sicily: 9 July–17 August 1943, from the Allied invasion of the Italian island of Sicily (Operation Husky) through the Axis withdrawal across the Straits of Messina 2 - Naples-Foggia: 9 September 1943–21 January 1944, from the Allied landings on the Italian mainland at Salerno south of Naples (Operation Avalanche) to the Allied arrival at the Gustav Line in the Cassino area. 3 - Anzio: 22 January–24 May 1944, from the Allied landings at Anzio south of Rome (Operation Shingle) through protracted battles to the Anzio Breakout. 4 - Rome–Arno: 22 January–9 September 1944, from the Gustav Line battles near Cassino through Rome to the arrival at the Arno River Line 5 - Northern Apennines: 10 September 1944–4 April 1945; fromOperation Olive, the Gothic Line breakthrough, through subsequent battles in or near the northern Apennine Mountains 6 - Po Valley: 5 April–8 May 1945: Operation Grapeshot, the 1945 Allied spring offensive into the plains of northern Italy |

Appendix: Extended Family Members Who Served in the Italian Campaign:
- Roland and Rodney Paulson, my uncle Louis Petersen's nephews, were identical twins from Ames, Iowa who served together on a B-17 flying from the Foggia area. Their squadron used Azon, the Air Force's first guided bomb. Roland, as the lead bombardier, once disabled the Avisio viaduct on the main German supply line to Italy for several days.
- Ralph Shower of Terre Haute, Indiana, my wife's uncle, was a member of a port battalion stationed in Naples. Companies from his battalion would load ships in Naples, and then accompany the ships to the Anzio beachhead, where the ships would unload, while sometimes under fire.
- Ralph Edward Spencer, Jr. of Boomer Township, my step-uncle, served with the 3rd Infantry Division in North Africa, Sicily, the Italian mainland, and then in southern France.
