- 3 September Operation Baytown - British and Canadian forces from British Eighth Army cross from Sicily over Straits of Messina and land on toe of Italian peninsula against light resistance.
- 9 September - Operation Avalanche - British and US forces from US Fifth Army land at Salerno on Italian Peninsula south of Naples against heavy resistance.
- 9 September - Operation Slapstick - British forces land at Taranto on the heel of the Italian peninsula with no resistance.
- 1 October - Fifth Army forces occupy Naples after a popular uprising.

- British 7th Armoured Division (Erskine) - began landing at Salerno from Syria 15 Sep 1943.
- US 36th Infantry Division (Walker) - assaulted Salerno 9 Sep1943.
- US 45th Infantry Division (Middleton) - from US; to VI Corps 14 August 1943; assaulted Salerno 9 Sep 1943.
- US 3rd Infantry Division (Truscott) - landed at Salerno 18 Sep 1943.
- US 34th Infantry Division (Ryder) - from II Corps 13 Aug 1943; finished landing at Salerno 25 Sep 1943.
