Key Dates: (all 1943)
  • 3 September Operation Baytown - British and Canadian forces from British Eighth Army cross from Sicily over Straits of Messina and land on toe of Italian peninsula against light resistance.
  • 9 September - Operation Avalanche - British and US forces from US Fifth Army  land at Salerno on Italian Peninsula south of Naples against heavy resistance.
  • 9 September - Operation Slapstick - British forces land at Taranto on the heel of the Italian peninsula with no resistance.
  • 1 October - Fifth Army forces occupy Naples after a popular uprising.

⏶   British X Corps (McCreery) - assaulted Salerno 9 Sep 1943 as US Fifth Army's left wing.
  • British 46th Infantry Division (Hawkesworth) - assaulted Salerno from Tunisia 9 Sep 1943.
  • British 56th Infantry Division (Graham until Oct 1943, then Templer) - assaulted Salerno from Libya 9 Sep 1943.
  • British 7th Armoured Division (Erskine) - began landing at Salerno from Syria 15 Sep 1943.
⏶   US VI Corps (Dawley until 21 Sep 1943, then Lucas) - assaulted Salerno 9 Sep1943 as Fifth Army's right wing.
  • US 36th Infantry Division (Walker) - assaulted Salerno 9 Sep1943.
  • US 45th Infantry Division (Middleton) - from US; to VI Corps 14 August 1943; assaulted Salerno 9 Sep 1943.
  • US 3rd Infantry Division (Truscott) - landed at Salerno 18 Sep 1943.
  • US 34th Infantry Division (Ryder) - from II Corps 13 Aug 1943; finished landing at Salerno 25 Sep 1943.

◼ British Eighth Army (Montgomery)
⏶    under Eighth Army control:
  • British 1st Airbourne Division (Hopkinson until 9 Sep 1943, then Down) - landed at Taranto, Italy 9 Sep 1943; returned to England Oct 1943 leaving 2nd Brigade behind.
⏶    British XIII Corps (Dempsey)
  • British 5th Infantry Division (Bucknall) - left wing of 3 Sep 1943 Operation Baytown landings.
  • 1st Canadian Infantry Division (Simonds until 31 Oct 1943, then Vokes) - right wing of 3 Sep 1943 Operation Baytown landings.
⏶    British V Corps (Allfrey) - landed at Taranto, Italy 18 Sep 1943.
  • British 78th Infantry Division (Evelegh until Dec 1943, then Keightley) - landed at Bari, Italy beginning 22 Sep 1943.
  • 8th Indian Infantry Division (Russell) - landed at Taranto, Italy beginning 23 September 1943.
