About the Slapton Sands webpage header:
- Alvin Eldred Aid, listed above, was among the approximately 749 Americans killed in the Slapton Sands disaster. German e-boats attacked a poorly-defended US convoy approaching Slapton Sands in southwestern England for the Operation Tiger training exercise preparatory to the D-Day landing on Utah Beach. The M3 Sherman tank shown here went down with a US tank landing ship. The tank was recovered from underwater by Ken Small, a pubic-spirited Englishman/ and since 1984 has served as a memorial to this tragic event.
