- 1920 US Navy Academy graduate; married Margarita Mayes 1924, two children.
- entered service 24 Jul 1917 from Logan, Harrison Co.; next of kin wife, Mrs. Margarita Mayes Isbell, 3901 Jocelyn St, DC; buried at sea; memorialized Courts of the Missing, Natl. Cem. of the Pacific, Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii; cenotaph Logan Cem., Harrison Co.
- at time of death Isbell was attached as an observer to carrier USS Franklin (CV-13), Task Force 58.2, engaged in air strikes off the Japanese home islands; scheduled to assume command of USS Yorktown (CV-10); KIA 19 Mar 1945 kamikaze; 807 died, Franklin survived.
- Military Note: Isbell had previously commanded hunter-killer Task Group 21-14, based on escort carrier USS Card (CVE-11); its first two patrols from July–November 1943 resulted in the sinking of eight, possibly nine, German submarines in the North Atlantic.
- Military Note: even though the Franklin survived, the death toll was highest of any US Navy ship in WWII except for the loss at Pearl Harbor of the USS Arizona.
- Note: namesake destroyer USS Arnold J. Isbell (DD-869) was in service from 1946 to 1972.
