(Seabees), based near Henderson Field, Guadalcanal, Solomon Is.; KIA 16 Oct 1942 off Lunga Pt., Guadalcanal; a 17-man detail was unloading gasoline from the USS McFarland onto a pontoon barge when the McFarland was attacked by nine Japanese dive bombers; nine seabees died from a direct hit on the barge; the McFarland also suffered damage & casualties during the attack.

  • Notes: Jensen's squadron was transferring to March Field, Riverside, CA after a training exercise over the Mohave Desert; encountering poor visibility over the mountains, the formation spread out to avoid in-air collisions; #40-1475 hit a tree on Keller Peak near Snow Valley and crashed; the six air crew and three ground crew all died.
