  • entered service 1 May 1942 from Kimballton, Audubon Co.; next of kin mother, Mrs. Anne Jensen, Kimballton, IA; body not recovered; memorialized Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cem., Luzon, Philippines.
  • 6th Naval Construction Bn. (Seabees), based near Henderson Field, Guadalcanal, Solomon Is.; KIA 16 Oct 1942 off Lunga Pt., Guadalcanal; a 17-man detail was unloading gasoline from the seaplane tender USS McFarland (AVD-14) onto a pontoon barge when the McFarland was attacked by nine Japanese dive bombers; nine seabees died from a direct hit on the barge; the McFarland also suffered damage & casualties during the attack.

  • 33rd Bomb. Sqdn., 27th Bomb. Gp., transferred from Langley Field, VA to Modoc/Edwards Air Base, CA in Dec 1941; Martin B-26 Marauder #40-1475 ground crew chief with pilot Frank Kobal; d. 30 Dec 1941 over San Bernardino Mts., San Bernardino Co., CA.  
  • Notes: Jensen's squadron was transferring to March Field, Riverside, CA after a training exercise over the Mohave Desert; encountering poor visibility over the mountains, the formation spread out to avoid in-air collisions; #40-1475 hit a tree on Keller Peak near Snow Valley and crashed; the six air crew and three ground crew all died.
