bigpigeon.us webpage WWII Dead > Roster Sources > 1946 Navy Dept. Report, © 2025 by Robert A. Christiansen, updated by RAC 23 Apr 2025
As of November 2023, the website naval-history.net may be unavailable. Thus I have provided two links below.

https://ia801306.us.archive.org/29/items/statesummaryofwa00unit_30/statesummaryofwa00unit_30.pdf and https://www.naval-history.net/WW2UScasStateIowa.htm each contain a searchable list of 3,000 WWII US Navy, Marine Corps, & Coast Guard casualties for Iowa, including 1,412 dead. These webpages are translations to the web of the 1946 US Navy Department publication State Summary of War Statistics [Iowa].

From this publication, I have prepared two lists of WWII Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard dead with next of kin living in 19 Southwest Iowa counties.

  •  The alphabetical records within this summary include the decedent's name, rank, and service branch, followed by the next of kin's name and mailing address, but omits service numbers and lacks information such as death date or ship.

  • The summary excludes stateside deaths and in-theater non-combat-related deaths. See WWII Dead > Roster Outliers > Navy Dept. Omissions for a list of such individuals who are in the Pottawattamie Area WWII Dead Roster.)

(Copied as a backup to Big Pigeon from naval-history.net via my hard drive 26 Apr 2023.)
Individuals working with naval-history.net have developed an alternative, as-yet incomplete, resource which:
  • breaks Navy Department deaths up into deaths by service branch (Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard).
  • combines all states.
To search this alternative:
  1. Click on http://www.naval-history.net/WW2USCas.htm to access this resource. You should see a heading like World War 2 - United States Navy at War UNITED STATES NAVY, COAST GUARD and MARINE CORPS CASUALTIES, 1941-1945.
  2. Select Part 1 - by NAME in the service branch of interest.
  3. Search the resulting list for the name of interest; this is usually faster than scrolling.
