About the webpage header sketch above:
- This sketch depicts the Western Engineer, which in 1819 was the first steamboat to ascend the Missouri River as far as the Council Bluffs area. Carrying the Stephen Long party, the Western Engineer reached a point west of the Big Pigeon area, where the Long party established a temporary winter camp called Engineer Cantonment.
- Archeologists located the Engineer Cantonment site a few years ago. Interested readers can view http://www.nebraskahistory.org/archeo/pubs/Engineer%20Cantonment.pdf.
- The sketch is attributed to Titian Ramsay Peale, a member of the Long party. The original is located in Philadelphia. I used a version found at http://steamboattimes.com/steamboats_1811~61_p1.html.
