General Eisenhower had originally planned for a pause to regroup at the Seine River before continuing on to Germany's defensive barrier, the Siegfried Line.
The Wehrmacht's abrupt withdrawal from much of France led Eisenhower to cancel this pause. Some units, such as elements of the Third Army's XV Corps, were sent ahead to clear areas along the lower Seine to block retreating German forces and provide subsequent crossing points by follow-up units. Compare the accompanying map, which shows advance Allied positions on 25 August, with the more-conservative situation map below, which shows many German units thought to be still attempting to maintain a north-south line in the Normandy area. |
