The Corps of Discovery was the official name of the Lewis and Clark party, which travelled from St. Louis, Missouri to the Oregon coast in 1804 and 1805, returning to St. Louis in 1806. While traveling on the Missouri River, they passed by Southwest Iowa, where they first encountered Native Americans.
