Passing by Southwest Iowa in 1804 and again in 1806, the Corps of Discovery did not find any established trading posts on the Missouri River. Earlier trading posts, established by the French, had been disestablished. Trading was done by itinerant traders, bringing their goods up the Missouri River and then returning to St. Louis with furs.
Fifteen years later, passing up the Missouri River in 1819, the Yellowstone Expedition passed several such posts. I hope to subsequently list such posts, with their locations, operators, and years of operation. Most were in Indian Territory, on the west side of the Missouri River.
