Viewed geographically, the War with Japan had two major components:
- The war on the Asian continent, which started with the Second Sino-Japanese War between China and Japan from 1937 to 1941, and segued into operations in what is known as the China-Burma-India (CBI) Theater from 1941 to 1945.
- The war in the vast Pacific Ocean area, often briefly referred to as Pacific Theater operations, from 1941 to 1945.
- The war in Asia involved the Republic of China vs the Japanese Empire from 1937 to 1941 and the British Empire, United States and Republic of China vs. the Japanese Empire from 1941 to 1945.
- Pacific Theater operations primarily involved the United States vs. Japan, with Australia and New Zealand providing major help in the Southwest Pacific.

- Lloyd Joyce of Garden City, Kansas, my daughter's father-in-law, served with the 112th Cavalry Regiment. His unit first saw combat during the December 1943 landing at Aware on the south coast of New Britain in the Bismarck Archipelago. Lloyd's unit later fought in northern New Guinea and on Leyte and Luzon in the Philippines. Lloyd suffered a serious shrapnel wound on Leyte but after hospitalization returned to his unit on Luzon.
