WWII Campaign Deaths
|
- The table is in two alphabetical parts — Atlantic Area Campaigns (War with Germany) and Pacific Area Campaigns (War with Japan).
- This table includes both Army ground forces and air forces.
- The parentheses in the first column refer to the theater in which the campaign was waged. ETO - European Theater of Operations, MTO - Mediterranean Theater of Operations, NP - North Pacific, SP - South Pacific, CP - Central Pacific, SWPA - Southwest Pacific Area, CBI - China-Burma-India Theater.
- The Division column holds the number of deaths of divisional troops.
- Three of the campaigns, Air Offensive, Europe (prior to D-Day), Egypt-Libya, and Air Offensive, Japan were strictly Army Air Force campaigns. Otherwise Army Air Force deaths were distributed among ground campaigns, with the exception of the Anzio campaign, which was assigned zero air deaths.
- There were never any US units of division size in the CBI Theater or in the East Indies. However, the source document is in error by omitting the Philippine Division, which was lost in the 1942 Philippine Islands Campaign.
- Leyte, Luzon & Southern Philippines numbers reflect three separate campaigns. Burma, 1942 & India-Burma reflect two separate campaigns.
- Death counts in the Papua Campaign are obviously wrong, being too small. Some other death counts, such as air deaths in different theaters, are probably wrong.
- To some extent, campaigns are an arbitrary creation, partly designed to aid in the award of unit honors and individual campaign ribbons. The Rhineland Campaign in particular is a hodgepodge; historians subsequently study portions, which they then might call campaigns (e.g., the Lorraine Campaign).
- The US Navy list of WWII campaigns was quite different.
