US Army Divisions in the European Theater Campaigns
  • All but three of the many US divisions that fought in the European Theater came to western Europe via the British Isles.
  • The three exceptions were the 3rd, 36th, and 45th Infantry Divisions, which were reassigned from the Italian Campaign and landed in southern France in August 1944.
  • The 66th Infantry Division may be the only ETO division that never experienced combat on the main battle line. It was battered by the loss of men and equipment from the torpedoing of the SS Leopoldville off Cherbourg on Christmas Eve, 1944 and was assigned to duty on the French coast, where enclaves of German troops remained.
