Comparing Iowa Deaths in WWI and WWII Iowa:
- Since 1900, United States population has more than quadrupled while that of Iowa has only increased by about 45%. Consequently, In 1900, about one in 35 Americans was an Iowan, dropping by the time of WWI to about one in 40, by WWII to one in 60, and by 2020 to about one in 100. (Some of these figures are approximate, computed in my head). Thus, we'd expect Iowa's percentage contribution to WWII US deaths to be less in WWII than in WWI.
- Officially, 3,576 Iowans died in WWI and 8,398 in WWII. US WWI deaths approximated 117,000, WWII deaths 405,000. Using this data, Iowa's percentage of WWI deaths is 3,537/117,000 = 3.0%, while Iowa's percentage of WWII deaths is 8,398/405,000 = 2.1%.
