Big Pigeon's World War II component supports what I call the Pottawattamie Area WWII Dead Roster, which memorializes nearly 700 Iowans who once lived in the Pottawattamie area and who died in service during WWII.
The five modules comprising this component appear on the right of the above navigation bar, namely WWII Roster, WWII Hub, WWII US, WWII Japan, and WWII Germany.

To View Pottawattamie Area World War II Dead Roster Information
From within Big Pigeon's WWII Roster module, you can view information about roster members from three perspectives:
- WWII Roster > Roster Records - view alphabetical lists of roster members' records. These records, which contain very brief biographic data, occupy 24 webpages.
- WWII Roster > Roster Residences - view lists of roster members by their home residence location (by town for the Pottawattamie area, otherwise by county or state).
- WWII Roster > Roster Fatalities - view lists of roster members by death location. For combat deaths, this is generally the campaign or battle in which they became a fatality.
World War II Combat Summaries
I am endeavoring to organize and summarize the United States role in WWII combat. WWII Hub shows the combat summary webpages which comprise the WWII Japan and WWII Germany modules. It includes links to submodules, each treating a portion of World War II combat. Not all combat summary webpages are complete.
The WWII US Module
The WWII US module contains disparate webpages that do not fit in nicely elsewhere. This is mostly information of a non-combat nature about United States involvement in World War II. This module is largely independent of the Pottawattamie Area WWII Area Dead Roster project.
Linking the Pottawattamie Area WWII Dead Roster and the World War II Combat Webpages
Each roster member who died overseas appears in a list at the bottom of the corresponding WWII combat webpage. Via this webpage, website visitors may gain some understanding of how a member's death figured into the complexity of World War II combat. (Remember that not all combat webpages are complete.)
Post-Separation Deaths
After leaving military service, many WWII veterans carried a physical or psychic burden, sometimes unknown to their family, friends and community. I once thought that looking at the causes of death of veterans who died within a few years of leaving service might cast some light on the nature of these burdens.
- WWII Roster > WWII Non-Roster Dead > Pre-1950 Dead Veterans lists 76 Pottawattamie area WWII veterans who died before the end of 1949, generally including the cause of death.
- Such deaths are included in the Roster Residences lists mentioned above but not in Roster Records or Roster Fatalities.
Some General Information
- A hotspot in the upper right corner of most webpages will send you up one level in the website hierarchy.
