By 30 June 1944, 25 days after the D-Day landings, combat was still confined to northern Normandy.
By the end of June 1944, Allied forces had captured the port of Cherbourg and the remainder of the Cotentin Peninsula. Elsewhere they were constrained to a beachhead between 5 and 20 miles in depth.
